A Kid Like Jake
August 31, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
A young couple hoping to get their toddler into an exclusive kindergarten are advised to play up their son’s fondness for princesses and dress-up in this recent off-Broadway sensation.
This is a play about parenting — Alexandra and Greg have a 4-year-old, and they’re trying to do whatever they can to give him a good life. At present, that means getting him into an elite kindergarten, and we meet them in the midst of that process, writing essays and struggling with how to prepare Jake for tests and interviews. But things get even more complicated when they’re advised to emphasize Jake’s “gender-variant play” — he likes dressing up like Snow White and Cinderella — and all of their most fervently held beliefs are called into question.
This is one of those plays that is so deeply and minutely observed that you can’t help but assume that it’s autobiographical, that it’s practically a transcript of conversations from the writer’s own life. The playwright, Daniel Pearle, however, has never been married or a parent, and this is his first professionally-produced play. All the same, you might just wonder if in fact he’s managed to overhear some of your conversations.
Runs: Aug. 29 – Sept. 20. Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m., Sundays, 2 p.m. and Wednesdays, Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.
