Hand Drumming Workshops with River Guerguerian

We welcome anyone who has ever been intrigued by the ancient, mystical and joyous aspects of the drum. Become actively engaged in a life of rhythm at whatever level you seek: physical, healthful, soulful. River’s workshops inspire beginners to explore new possibilities, advanced students to aspire to deepening their skills and all participants to resonate in the supportive community that grows from making music together.
10am-12:30pm Introduction to Hand Drumming Skills: $35
~ building upon your own naturally-given rhythm; experiencing your internal pulse.
~ how to produce well-rounded tones and make your drum sing!
~ playing harmoniously with other people
~ focus on middle eastern finger techniques adaptable to all hand drums
This class is for beginners as well as more experienced drummers. If you have never touched a drum before you will learn basic finger techniques. If you have been playing for a while, it offers a more in depth exploration and practice session to build defined tones, hand strength and refine your definition and skills. Excellent warm up for the following workshop.
2-5pm Intermediate/Advanced: $45
~ exploring rhythms from around the world (Middle East, Brazil, Africa, India)
~ layering poly-rhythms and ensemble playing
~ odd time rhythms
~ finger style techniques used for frame drum, doumbek, riq, tambourine, pandeiro, kanjira and more
~ moving meditation as we walk and drum on the UCP Serenity Trail
Additional Details: Bring your drums: doumbeks, djembes, frame drums, riqs, tambourines, pandeiros, kanjiras and cajons. A few loaners are available. If you have drums to share, please bring them.
There will be various drums and CDs available for sale during both classes.

River Guerguerian (Multi-Percussionist/Composer/Educator) has been inspiring audiences with his ecstatic and versatile percussion for over thirty years. Whether collaborating with world-class artists, supporting symphonies or creating his own dynamic explorations of rhythm, River’s devotion and attention to the vibrant life of the drum reverberate through the mind and soul of the listener. He recently returned from a thirty day, twenty-city tour in China, with his award-winning group, Free Planet Radio. River has performed internationally with such groups as the BBC Concert Orchestra, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Tan Dun, Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Berry, and Ziggy Marley/Gypsy Kings. He has performed in the prestigious concert halls of most major cities of the world, including Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House and Lincoln Center. He has recorded on over 200 albums and film soundtracks. He received his Bachelor of Music from the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory in 1989, and soon after left civilization for five years to live in a wildlife sanctuary in the Himalayas. River is the Music Director of the Odyssey Community School, and as Artistic Director for Asheville Rhythm, produces The Asheville Percussion Festival, now in its sixth year. He conducts rhythm and sound exploration workshops throughout the country, and weekly multi-generational percussion classes. He was recently voted the Best of Asheville “musician who gives back”.
