The Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library and the Friends of the Durham County Public Library present a special Meet the Author Tea with our special guest, Dan Ariely whose most recent book is The Honest Truth About Dishonesty with the subtitle How We Lie to Everyone – Especially Ourselves. He is a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight. He is also the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University and is currently a Senior Fellow, Duke University Kenan Institute for Ethics and a member of the United Nations University International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change. He is the author of three New York Times bestsellers exploring irrational human behavior and has spent 20 years researching behavioral economics. He is dedicated to answering questions like: “Why do we so often fail to act in our own best interest? Why do we promise to skip the chocolate cake, only to find ourselves drooling our way into temptation when the dessert tray rolls around? Why do we overvalue things that we’ve created ourselves? Are we in control of our own behavior?” His goal is to help people live more sensible, if not more rational, lives. This is a fascinating, learned, and funny book that will make you a better person. Ariely specializes in unusual experiments that are consistently interesting, amusing and informative.
Refreshments at 3:30, program at 4:00. Event is free and open to the public!
Ariely’s first book, recently reissued, is entitled Predictably Irrational; The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions which explores the reasons why human beings frequently put aside common sense and the bad things that happen when they do. In The Upside of Rationality; The Unexpected Benefits of Defying Logic at Work and at Home, Ariely shows us some of the beneficial outcomes and pleasant surprises that often arise from irrational behavior.
