First Annual Preservation Conference 2014 “Roots of the Piedmont” Symposium

Preservation Chapel Hill, the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough will host the first annual Roots of the Piedmont preservation symposium, May 30 and 31, 2014. Friday’s event will be held at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, beginning at 8:45 am; and Saturday’s symposium will take place at the Historic Orange County Courthouse, N. Churton St. at E. King St., Hillsborough.

A leading group of preservations and historians will speak at the Chapel Hill/Orange County Preservation conference, including Myrick Howard, president of Preservation NC; Ramona Bartos, Deputy NC State Historic Preservation Officer; Dan Becker, Long-Range Planning Manager, City of Raleigh and many others.

mayor cupolaOn Friday evening, the key note address will be delivered by Dr. Daniel Bluestone, University of Virginia, who will speak on the subject of harmony and compatibility and how design controls regulate changes to historic places. Dr. Bluestone will use case studies to explore how the preservation movement is doing with design control efforts. Dr. Bluestone is the author of, Buildings, Landscapes, and Memory: Case Studies in Historic Preservation.

On Friday night, from 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm, an opening reception will take place at the Horace Williams House in Chapel Hill.

On Saturday, the group will move to Hillsborough.  The first speakers on Saturday are Linda Jacobson and John Blythe, UNC Libraries, who will present a talk on “Glen Lennox: Chapel Hill’s First Modern Planned Community—a Case Study in Developer and Community Partnership”

Speakers throughout the day consist of leaders in modernism, public archaeology, and historians who will address eighteenth century native communities.
