Plan now to attend this free event!
The Green Home Tour is an annual open-house tour of new and remodeled green certified homes throughout the Triangle, held in the Spring. This FREE event allows the public to tour the homes and see first hand green building practices and materials. Each home in the tour is inspected and third party verified, making sure each home meets the minimum certification requirements established by the National Green Building Standard. You are welcome to visit any (or all!) of the homes on Tour, in any order. Pick up a Tour book (or visit our online tour guide), choose a starting point and enjoy the Tour!
iPhone and Android Green Home Tour apps available!
About the Green Home Builders of the Triangle
Our green building program was launched in 2006 with the primary purpose of promoting building techniques and materials that produce homes which consume less energy and other resources, facilitate better indoor air quality, and provide a more durable product requiring less maintenance. Since November of 2006, we have been actively promoting green building in the Triangle through our annual Green Home Tour and a wide variety of green building educational programs. In addition, we had been operating a 3rd-party-verified certification program that was initially based on the Model Green Home Building Guidelines issued by the National Association of Home Builders. In early 2010, our program adopted the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) as its basis for certification. The NGBS is a consensus-based industry standard that provides the requirements for four levels of certification: bronze, silver, gold, and emerald.
In order to achieve a GHBT certificate for a home, a builder has been required to enroll the home in our program, complete a scoresheet to show that sufficient goals are being met in each of the program areas, include those components during construction, and work with a third-party verifier who checks to ensure that adequate goals have been met. Click here to learn about the homes that have been enrolled and certified in our program.
In September of 2010, the GHBT program stopped taking new certification enrollments and encouraged builders to use the NAHBGreen certification program, with which GHBT is affiliated. The NAHBGreencertification program is also based on the NGBS, so the basis for certification remains the same as under the GHBT certification program.
