Art Menius, Executive Director at The ArtsCenter, says of April Verch Band, “Featured in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics opening ceremonies and selected to showcase at WOMEX 2013, the single most important world music conference in Wales, April Verch has matured into a formidable musician, singer, and dancer. I first heard April a decade or so ago in a private Rounder Records showcase in a Nashville hotel room. The Berklee School of Music alumna had released her first CD back in 1992 and won the Canadian Grand Masters and Open Fiddle Championships. All the dance (Ottawa Valley style “It’s more energetic, more hopping, a little higher off the ground” than Irish or Appalachian styles) and fiddle skills were present then, but she has just started singing on stage. Since then she has grown as entertainer, recording artist, vocalist, and band leader tremendously. Originally celebrated for her mastery of traditional Ottawa Valley fiddle styles, April has absorbed bluegrass and old-time into fiddling and become a thoroughly enchanting singer, as heard on 2013’s Bright Light Gold. The April Verch Band, thus, appeals to many different roots music audiences who share an appreciation for one of the finest younger artists in North America today.”
