The enchanting 700-year-old Yakshagana dance drama tradition is one of south India’s most distinctive art forms, featuring elaborate costumes and makeup, stylized dancing, live accompaniment and complex face and hand gestures. Vidya Kolyur revolutionized the traditionally male-dominated Yakshagana form, winning widespread praise from luminaries in the field. Here, her dance troupe from Karnataka performs scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana, the two major Sanscrit epic poems of ancient India.
