The Workboats of Core Sound: Stories and Photographs from Down East

February 4, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
WORKBOATS Cover Image

Lawrence Earley will share selected photographs and vignettes from his project highlighting the lives and histories of the fishing boats and people of Eastern North Carolina.

Earley’s latest book, The Workboats of Core Sound: Stories and Photographs of a Changing World focuses on the rich history behind these hand-built wooden fishing boats. Through a mix of essays, interviews, and photographs, Earley captures the boats’ hidden stories of boatbuilders, fishermen, family members, and community memory. Earley describes each workboast as “a memory bank of relationships and experiences.”

The book highlights a unique community and culture in North Carolina, complete with its own folkloric tales. Earley recounts one of his favorite stories about a fisherman who returned home to his wife after 20 years of fishing, only to ask, “What’re we having for supper?”
