Will We See The Old McDonald?

It’s difficult not to notice that as Leslie McDonald has gone of late, so have the Tar Heels. McDonald, who returned to the lineup on Dec. 18 vs. Texas after missing the first nine games of the regular season for receiving impermissible benefits, had a solid game vs. the Longhorns with 15 points. Like his teammates, however, McDonald struggled through a 3-of-8 effort at the free throw line in the 86-83 loss to the Longhorns. The Tar Heels were a dismal 24 of 47 at the charity stripe. He went on to play fairly well in the next three...

James’ Return Should Bolster Heels On Both Ends Of Court

Setbacks like Sunday’s loss at Wake Forest are surely frustrating for the Tar Heels, but for the most part you can’t blame their defense. UNC has been mostly stellar on that end of the court, holding opponents to just 38.5 percent shooting. That was not the case vs. the Deacs, who knocked down 48.1 percent of their shots for the home court upset. The Heels did hold Wake Forest to a 2-of-12 effort from behind the arc, however. The Tar Heels’ own shooting woes, an abysmal 2 of 15 from three-point range in particular, were the biggest reason for...

Breaking Down The Bearcats

Cincinnati is more than just a town known for the Reds, great chili and the comedy classic WKRP, it also happens to boast a very good college football program. UNC will see for itself when it takes on the American Athletic Conference team in the 2013 Belk Bowl on Saturday, December 28th, in Bank of America Stadium. The Tar Heels, who battled their way to bowl eligibility with a 6-6 mark despite a 27-25 regular-season-ending loss to Duke, will face a 9-3 Bearcats squad coming off a 31-24 overtime loss to Louisville on December 5th. Prior to that, the...

“Dome At Last”: My First Visit To The Smith Center

Despite all the stories he does for and WCHL, there’s still only one Matt Oakes. Therefore, when Matt O took off for Charlotte to cover Florida State’s rout over Duke in the ACC title game, Matt P had an opening to report on Saturday’s Tar Heels men’s game vs. UNC-Greensboro. I did not tell my colleagues, but it was my first venture into the Dean E. Smith Center, a.k.a. the Dean Dome. The signage to the arena may not be the greatest, but I still shouldn’t have had to double back to the road where drivers were clearly...

Defense Helps Build Tar Heels Into Winner

Eighty, as in the number of points the Tar Heels scored in Saturday’s 80-20 win over Old Dominion, is remarkable to be sure. Another number associated with the Tar Heels, 90, might be even more impressive, however. It’s the total points the team has allowed in its last five games, all wins, as UNC climbed back into the bowl game picture. If the Tar Heels can top a revived Duke squad Saturday, no mean feat, the Tar Heels can also boast a winning record at 7-5. That’s almost unfathomable for a team that started the season 1-5, though as...
