    Millenials in Politics

    May 21, 2015 at 10:11 am

This is Matt Hughes. A recent Harvard poll of 18 to 29 year olds, folks who are classified as millennials, showed that many within my generation do not want to run for political office or engage in politics. And that’s dismaying. Unfortunately, many within my generation are turned off from politics and to a degree and […]

Artificial Segregation in Public High Schools

    May 20, 2015 at 7:00 am

This is Judy Jones. I have been thinking and reading a great deal about the incident with the Confederate Flag and the East Chapel Hill High Students. As a retired teacher from this high school, I am saddened by the lack of awareness of some of our students and I certainly share and understand the […]

  • Growing In Tae Kwon Do

    May 6, 2015 at 5:00 am

My name is Lucy Linh Murphy. I started studying Tae Kwon Do at Kim’s White Tiger when I was five and half years old. I just turned seven in April, and I am about to test for my black belt. I have learned so much from Tae Kwon Do, and I am hoping to share […]

  • Economic Democracy In A Co-op

    April 30, 2015 at 5:00 am

This is Geoff Gilson. I am a worker-owner with Weaver Street Market Co-operative. Just recently, we workers got a little scold from the powers-that-shouldn’t-be in our bi-weekly employee “Market Messenger” about not meeting “our” sales targets. And the fact that this would decrease the profit available for worker-owner and consumer-owner dividends. I was just about […]

  • Energy Freedom Now!

    April 29, 2015 at 9:23 am

This is Jim Warren. North Carolina is on track to greatly increase its use of solar power – at a really important time in the fight to slow climate change. The bipartisan Energy Freedom Act would allow well-financed companies to install solar power on customers’ property at no up-front cost – then sell them the […]

  • Widen Estes Drive!

    April 22, 2015 at 10:57 am

When Betsy and I left a medical office in Cary recently, we found ourselves heading home on I-40 just after 4 o’clock on a Friday afternoon. This is a punishment that only a mean-spirited judge would use as a sentence.

  • “Better Than Nothing” Isn’t Good Enough

    April 15, 2015 at 11:02 am

Remember all the fanfare last spring surrounding the Ephesus-Fordham redevelopment plan? How the new zoning code was going to eliminate traffic congestion, solve our flooding problems, bring us new shopping opportunities, create lots of affordable housing, improve the town’s balance sheet, help us lose weight and spice up our sex lives?

  • A Drought In Our Back Yard?

    April 10, 2015 at 10:26 am

Is it possible we could experience a severe drought this Summer? There is a high probability based upon long range weather forecasts, and we should be prepared. While our water reservoirs here in Orange County are at their highest peaks, a long, hot Summer with appreciable lack of rain would quickly draw down that supply.

  • UNC Board: Not A Winning Team

    April 9, 2015 at 9:16 am

This is Brian Thornburg. I don’t know about you, but I love cheering for UNC.  The way our men’s and women’s basketball teams played this season was enough to make you very proud to be a Tar Heel. In fact, most UNC teams are excellent and usually compete for national honors every season. But there’s one UNC […]

  • UNC’s Board Of Politicians

    March 27, 2015 at 5:00 am

This is Raleigh Mann. What are the qualifications for someone whose job it is to control a university? How about a whole bunch of universities – say, 17 of them? Some experience in higher ed administration is essential, wouldn’t you say? But members of our UNC System’s Board of Governors don’t bring that kind of […]
