The Music in My Head – 1/13/17

1/13/17: Stevie Wonder “Love’s in Need of Love Today” There was a two-hour show on ABC last night to celebrate the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture. The show was amazing, with a star-studded lineup that included some great musical performances from Gladys Knight, John Legend, Usher, and so many more. President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama were in the audience, clearly enjoying themselves. I kept thinking “what a cool First Family!” and the whole show just continued to blow me away. Near the end, Stevie Wonder came on stage and did a song from...

The Music in My Head – 11/12/16

1/12/17: Fleetwood Mac “Sara”  Nobody’s going to be surprised when I say I’m a big fan of Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks, in particular. This particular song just kind of floats along, getting into a nice mellow groove and staying there. There’s a heartbreaking story behind it, too… but I don’t want to get into that. Why Stevie wrote it is a downer, but “Sara” by Fleetwood Mac is the music in my head today.   The Music in My Head with Ron Stutts is presented by the all new School of Rock Chapel Hill. School of Rock is opening this...

The Music in My Head – 11/11/17

1/11/17: Buddy Guy & John Mayer “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember”  I woke up this morning with the Otis Redding song “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember” playing in my head. As my morning went on, it morphed into another version of the tune that I had just discovered several months ago. Otis Redding started to bleed over into the interpretation by legendary bluesman Buddy Guy and the extraordinary John Mayer. It’s one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard, but I could listen to it all day. The Music in My Head with Ron Stutts is presented by the all...

The Music in My Head – 1/10/17

1/10/17: Rod Stewart “Angel” Jimi Hendrix wrote and recorded “Angel” months before he died in 1970. It’s a song that has been covered and re-recorded by many artists including Fiona Apple, the Jeff Healey Band, and Rod Stewart. I’m a big Jimi Hendrix fan, and Rod Stewart’s version on “Never a Dull Moment” (which rocketed to #1 in the UK and here in the States, too!) shines through with all the loose rock n’ roll characteristic of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, who you can find these days playing alongside Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones. Focus on the guitar,...

The Music in My Head – 1/9/17

1/9/17: War. “Low Rider” This is one of those random songs that I have no idea about.  I mean, it’s a great song… but I don’t know why it keeps playing in my head.  Today. It’s War… a group that was made famous by Eric Burdon of the Animals.  He sang with ‘em for a while. The Music in My Head with Ron Stutts is presented by the all new School of Rock Chapel Hill. School of Rock is opening this spring at the old 501 Diner location. Now pre-enrolling for all programs and summer camps at chapelhill.schoolofrock.com or 919-338-1011. Ask...

The Music in My Head – 1/6/17

1/6/17: Jackson Browne. “Load Out/Stay” I never really get tired of this, although he’s done a lot of other great music, as well.  The quintessential California singer-songwriter, Jackson Browne wrote a song in appreciation of his road crew — the guys who stack it up and tear it down… and he said “Just be sure you got it all set to go, before you come for my piano,” and then he paired that with a song that would be the last in the concert:  “Stay” an old tune from Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs… and now?  They just go Together....

1/5/17: ZZ Top. “La Grange” Sometimes, I have no idea how this music gets stuck in my head.  This morning, I know why.  I heard this song on a television ad last night for motorcycle insurance.  It’s that little ol’ blues and boogie band from Texas… Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard. Ironically, the drummer, Frank Beard, is the only one without one.  This is “LaGrange.”  Haw, haw, haw, haw.   The Music in My Head with Ron Stutts is presented by the all new School of Rock Chapel Hill. 1/4/17: Led Zeppelin.  “Kashmir” I woke up with this song in my head this morning… the one-and-only Jimmy Page, guitar genius. Some people say it may be the greatest rock n’ roll song of all time.  I know it’s not far from the top.  It’s an amazing song performed live, too. The Music in My Head with Ron Stutts is presented by the all new School of Rock Chapel Hill. School of Rock is opening this spring at the old 501 Diner location.
