Kenan Stadium to Host July 4th Celebration

Kenan Stadium will be the host of a huge July 4th celebration on Saturday night. Gates open at seven o’clock and music will be provided by the Transit Vocal Band. DSI Comedy Theater is sponsoring a watermelon eating contest. Kids can enjoy face painting, inflatables, and midway-style games. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 Saturday night. WCHL’s Ron Stutts will serve as the master of ceremonies, and he got a preview of all of the festivities with Amanda Fletcher from the Town of Chapel Hill and members of the Transit Vocal Band. Jessica Washington Transferring to Kansas

Former North Carolina guard Jessica Washington is transferring to Kansas, according to ESPN. The university announced Washington’s intention to transfer earlier this year, after the conclusion of Washington’s sophomore year with the Tar Heels. Washington averaged more than seven points and two rebounds in more than 18 minutes per game last season. Washington was a McDonald’s All-American and part of the number one ranked recruiting class in 2013. All four of the members of that Tar Heel class have now transferred from UNC. Motorcyclist Killed in Orange County Crash

A motorcyclist died Wednesday after colliding with an SUV in Orange County. WTVD is reporting the accident occurred just before 11 o’clock Wednesday night on US-70 near Saint Mary’s Road in Hillsborough. Authorities say the driver of a Toyota SUV pulled into the pathway of the motorcycle from a driveway. The motorcyclist died after the impact. No names have been released at this time. The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team has now set its sights on Germany in the tournament semifinal on Tuesday. The U.S., stocked with six former North Carolina Tar Heels, knocked off China 1-0 on Friday night in the Quarterfinals. The Supreme Court has issued a ruling in favor of independent redistricting commissions in Arizona. In a 5-4, ruling the United States Supreme Court ruled citizens in Arizona did not remove power from state lawmakers by voting to establish an independent redistricting commission, according to Jane Pinsky – Director of the North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform. “The people of Arizona have the right to set up an independent redistricting commission,” she says. “The commission in Arizona was created by citizen initiative, and it was a clear sign that the people of Arizona wanted a fair and...

Damon Seils Running for Re-election

Damon Seils has announced that he intends to file for re-election to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen next week when the filing period opens. Siels was elected to the board two years ago to fill a vacant seat after Dan Coleman moved to Australia. UNC Finishes Fifth in Directors’ Cup

UNC finished fifth in this year’s Learfield Directors’ Cup, its highest finish since 2009 and the 18th time Carolina has finished in the top 10 in the 22-year history of the award. Remembering Chancellor William Aycock

A memorial was held on Friday afternoon for William B. Aycock. Aycock served as Chancellor at UNC from 1957 – 1964 and was a faculty member at the School of Law before and after his time as Chancellor. Overall, Aycock served the University of North Carolina for nearly 40 years, from his first faculty appointment at the school of law in 1948 until his retirement in 1985.
